Abstract

Propecia (finasteride) is a widely prescribed drug for male pattern hair loss, particularly in men with thinning hair. While its efficacy is limited, its mechanism of action is well-understood and may influence its effects on the body.

Background

Study Design

Study Population

The study population consisted of men aged 18-55 years with a mean age of 60.5 (± 6.5) years who were seeking treatment for male pattern hair loss at baseline and at 6 months and 12 months, and 1,300 patients who received the following medications: 1.5 mg finasteride (generic name Propecia®), 0.625 mg finasteride (generic name Propecia®), and 0.5 mg finasteride (generic name Proscar®).

Patients who had received finasteride for at least 1 year were excluded because of any hair loss or recurrence in the first year of treatment. This study was a prospective, open-label, pilot study.

Assessment of Variables

The following variables were assessed for eligibility:
